New venue, new products
The National Association of Oil Heating Service Managers Convention was held at the new Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Conn., May 20-21.
“Over the course of the three days…we had 4,250 visit,” said Judy Garber, NAOHSM show coordinator. “To compare these statistics, we were down 15 percent over 2007 (Hershey location) and 10 percent down from 2006 when we were in Hartford. We had 193 individual exhibiting companies.”
At the opening reception Monday, May 19, industry contributor Dan Holohan was roasted by his colleagues. Contributors to the event included, John Barba, TACO; Jim Olsztynski, Plumbing & Mechanical; Ellen Rohr, Bare Bones Biz; Dave Yates, F.W. Behler; three of Dan’s daughters as well as Judy Garber. Service manager for Boro Fuel, Mike Santoro acted as the MC.
Care to Ride, an event held to help raise funds for Oil Heat Cares, was held at noon on Monday. Participants walked, rode bikes, ran and contributed to the charity for a grand total of $70,000. Oil Heat Cares is an organization that helps NAOHSM members to install new equipment in homes of their customers in need, such as the elderly, veterans, food banks, women’s shelters, etc. The program’s fourth annual board of directors meeting was also held during the convention. Among budget talks, the board discussed the winners of the Oil Heat Cares Cup, which went to the New York Chapter for the Emmaus House project, the Rhode Island Chapter for the Habitat for Humanity project and the Garden State Chapter.
The highlight of the NAOHSM Convention is the Awards Banquet which was held on Tuesday, May 20 at the host hotel, the Marriott. At the dinner, the NAOHSM’s new officers were welcomed. They are as follows: President George McQueeney with East River Energy, Guilford, Conn., New Haven Chapter; Vice President Jay Moser with Harris Fuel, Bristol Pa., Bucks-Mont Chapter; Vice President Dan Auciello with Petro, Holtsville, N.Y., Nassau-Suffolk Chapter; Vice President James Falconi with Falconi Bros., Inc., Southboro, Mass., Central MA Chapter; Vice President Ralph Adams with Parker Fuel Co., Ellicott City, Md., Mid-Atlantic Chapter; Treasurer Rosemarie Bartchak with Boyertown Furnace, Pottstown, Pa., Berks Chapter; and Secretary Dan Thomas with Bell Simons Co., Stamford, Conn., Fairfield County Chapter.
Also at the Awards Banquet, the scholarship winners were honored. The Jack Sullivan Award, sponsored by Taco, went to Michael Cullinan of Webster, Mass. Cullinan is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Iraq and received a standing ovation when he was presented his award by Mickey Phillips of Taco. The Delavan Award went to Brandon Darrah of Coudersport, Pa. The Honeywell Award went to Michael Gadbois of Salem, Conn. and was presented by Axel Reichert.
The 2008 Dave Nelsen Scholarship Winners were Anthony Alfano of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; Dana Borriello — Hampstead, N.H.; Matthew Latimer of Red Lion, Pa.; Gregory Miller of Easton, Pa.; Joshua Saeler of Fenelton, Pa.; and Adam Sproul of Bangor, Maine.
Finally, the 2008 NAOHSM Awards were presented. Instructor of the Year went to Bill McDermott, ICPA School, CT Valley Chapter Member. Associate of the Year went to Fuel Oil News columnist Charlie Bursey, F.W. Webb Co. and president of the RI Chapter. Service Manager of the Year went to Paul Cuprewich, Woolley Fuel Co, Maplewood N.J. and president of the Garden State Chapter. The Hugh McKee Award went to Dorsey Finn, Mitchell Supreme Fuel, Orange N.J., Garden State Chapter. Manufacturer of the Year went to Slant Fin. And the Lifetime Achievement Award went to John Wilcox, retired from Moyer & Son, Souderton, Pa., Bucks-Mont Chapter and co-chair of the convention committee.
Plans are already in motion for the next convention in 2009 to be held in Hershey, Pa., May 17 to 21.
